Dall’alto di una collina, il paese di Radda in Chianti domina il centro della regione del Chianti Storico. Le origini di Radda risalgono al 2000 a.c., come testimoniano i resti archeologici sul Monte alla Croce: un antico villaggio etrusco. Dell’insediamento di questo popolo ne sono rimaste le tracce in antichi casolari che circondano il paese. Verso la metà del duecento, il governo fiorentino riorganizzò l’amministrazione e la difesa del proprio dominio e istituì la Lega del Chianti e Radda fu scelta come sede di uno dei terzieri e ne divenne capoluogo, in cui risiedeva nel Palazzo Pretorio il Podestà a capo della lega e ne ricordiamo Francesco Ferrucci tra i più importanti. Radda è racchiusa dentro una cerchia muraria in parte conservata, al suo interno troviamo l’antico Palazzo del Podestà e la Chiesa di San Niccolò. Il palazzo del Podestà è stato recentemente ristrutturato e riportate alla luce le vecchie carceri, mantenute intatte nel tempo. Poco fuori dalle mura, si trova un’antica costruzione edificata durante il Granducato: La Ghiacciaia, costruita a forma di cono e seminterrata ed utilizzata per trasformare la neve, che veniva raccolta al suo interno, in blocchi di ghiaccio. Le chiese più importanti del comune di Radda in Chianti, oltre alla Propositura di San Niccolò, sono la chiesa di Santa Maria in Prato, antico convento; la Pieve di Santa Maria Novella e la Commenda di Sant’Eufrosino a Volpaia. Nella via centrale del paese si trovano le maggiori attività commerciali di cui ne fanno da padrone le enoteche e i ristoranti.
